BELIZE CITY, Belize - August 2007
Hurricane Dean made landfall in southern Mexico early on Tuesday morning with the southern edge passing through Belize’s northern region. The country experienced heavy rains, localized flooding and large waves along the coast. With minimal damages incurred throughout the country, the Government of Belize has declared an all clear for the country with most hotels and businesses open and operational. "We are grateful that Belize was relatively unscathed by Hurricane Dean", says Director of Tourism Tracy Panton. "With no major damages, most of the country’s hotels and attractions are welcoming guests merely one day after the hurricane passed." The following is a status report being provided by the Belize Tourism Board:
Overall Assessment: Water, electricity and telephone services have been restored in every region of the country.
Airport/Airlines: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, Belize’s local air carriers, have resumed normal flight service to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and continue to fly to all other regions of the country. Major US-based airlines including American Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways have resumed their normal schedule of flights into Belize.
Cruise:
Hotels: Some hotels located in Belize’s northernmost district, Corozal, reported structural damage, however many of the hotels in Corozal will be open and operating by Friday, August 24th. Throughout the country hoteliers are offering special prices and packages through November and these can be found here.
