Hurricane Dean

Hurricane Dean Spares Belize

BELIZE CITY, Belize - August 2007

Hurricane Dean made landfall in southern Mexico early on Tuesday morning with the southern edge passing through Belize’s northern region. The country experienced heavy rains, localized flooding and large waves along the coast. With minimal damages incurred throughout the country, the Government of Belize has declared an all clear for the country with most hotels and businesses open and operational.

"We are grateful that Belize was relatively unscathed by Hurricane Dean", says Director of Tourism Tracy Panton. "With no major damages, most of the country’s hotels and attractions are welcoming guests merely one day after the hurricane passed."

The following is a status report being provided by the Belize Tourism Board:

Overall Assessment:
There was no damage sustained in Belize City, Western and Southern Belize. Northern Belize experienced the greatest impact while the islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker has limited structural damage, battered foliage, debris, and some level of beach erosion.
